Rambling on and on and on about farming, food and astronomy. Astronomy? Yep. Farming and astronomy go together like garlic and basil, tomatoes and peppers, ice cream and bacon.

Pears are running a bit late this year. They are only just now starting to ripen. This was one of a pair that we got from Walmart of all places. It’s mate passed away long ago, but this one is thriving despite assorted problems over the years. it has a two year cycle, one year it will be loaded with fruit, the next the crop will be sparse. This is a sparse year. concerned about how long it is taking for the fruit to ripen. Coming up on the end of September and they are still green and hard. Once they do ripen, they are absolutely luscious— silken smooth texture, incredibly sweet and simply delicious.

Got the new rotary tiller Thursday! I was looking for a used one all summer and finally gave up, bit the bullet and bought a new one. I had looked at the Fleet Farm model, and while it was cheap, it wasn’t the best built thing I’ve ever seen. This one, a Kuhn, is built like a tank. Does a wonderful job.

I was pleasantly surprised by the condition of the soil in that field as I did some experimenting with the tiller. It is much better than I thought it was.
