Rambling on and on and on about farming, food and astronomy. Astronomy? Yep. Farming and astronomy go together like garlic and basil, tomatoes and peppers, ice cream and bacon.

Pears everywhere! The wind storm last night pretty much stripped the pear tree. I didn’t think there were many on that tree this season, but I ended up gathering up 2 five gallon pails full of pears this morning.

There would have been far more but my wife and I weren’t the only ones going after the pears. At least a third of the windfall fruit had been nibbled on by something. I wouldn’t mind so much if they would at least eat the whole fruit, but the little critters were going from one pear to another, taking a bite here, a bite there.

Most are still on the green side and will have to ripen for a few days, but the ripe ones are absolutely luscious. The texture is amazing, silken smooth, dripping with juice and so sweet! Oh, they don’t look perfect. Far from it. They have blemishes and spots and most aren’t perfectly shaped, but the flavor!

In a few days, after they ripen up a bit, I’ll pull the canning equipment out of the basement and get to work and when we pull out a jar in the middle of Feburary when the snow is blowing outside, they’ll taste even better.
