Rambling on and on and on about farming, food and astronomy. Astronomy? Yep. Farming and astronomy go together like garlic and basil, tomatoes and peppers, ice cream and bacon.

Steve got the old workbench out of the pump house, the last thing that needed to be removed so he could work on the framing and insulation. Despite the way it looks in the photo, it is in surprisingly good condition considering that it is probably over 100 years old.

The construction is amazing. The main work surface is a single hardwood board (we suspect maple or white oak) at least 3 inches thick 20 inches wide and around six feet long. This is not laminated. It is a single board! It wa made by someone who really knew what they were doing, with beautiful dovetail joints, decorative scroll work along the edges and flawless joints.

Yes, it’s beat up and covered with a century of grease, oil, grime and just plain dirt, but we’re going to clean it up and do our best to salvage it.
